Gerry Dolan, purchasing manager with Glennon Brothers Sawmills, made a big impact at a 'Talking Timber' forest harvesting event in Charleville recently organised by Teagasc and the Forest Service.

It's not often sawmills provide information to farmers on how to get the best price for their timber, but that's what Dolan set out to do at the Co Cork venue.

The event, which was attended by 150 forestry owners and forest industry representatives, heard Dolan encourage forest owners "to ask questions about thinning and clearfelling to maximise their return".

Forest owners – mainly farmers – had the opportunity to meet with timber buyers, harvesting contractors and foresters, and discuss the quality of timber required by Irish sawmills and how to maximise revenue.

It’s vital that we build trusted relationships with forest owners

“We were very pleased to be asked to give a demonstration to the forest owners and even happier to provide helpful advice," said Dolan, who has worked in forestry with Glennon Brothers for almost 40 years.

"On the supply side, it’s vital that we build trusted relationships with forest owners as a harvest cycle can take up to 25 or 30 years. Managing and maintaining a healthy crop during this cycle is essential to maximise returns.’’
