Brendan Gill from Dromid, worked for many years in the entertainment business. He has met the Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and Led Zeppelin, but regrets not meeting Jimi Hendrix. Brendan always enjoys his trip to the Annual Cahersiveen races.
Held in August since 1852, they are a long-standing tradition in the town. Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator, donated a site on his land at Carhan, specifically for horse racing, to be enjoyed by the townspeople of Caherciveen. He stipulated that the entrance to all race meetings would be free of charge.
The circular course crosses fields, the Reenrusheen road and runs parallel to the river Fertha providing a panoramic view. The races are run on a voluntary basis in August every year with kind permission of local landowners. \ Valerie O’Sullivan
