The nomination comes a week after O’Beirne was excluded from the running on the basis he was breaching rules.

The constitution of the IFA states that “a candidate for the office of president, deputy president or regional chairman shall be a full-time farmer by occupation”.

Mr O’Beirne is a postman and had plans to take a leave of absence from his job however, this had not commenced last week and he was therefore breaching IFA rules.

At the meeting last week, he was the only candidate with the necessary two nominations.

The rules and privileges committee made he decision at an emergency meeting that he would not be allowed to run at that time and nominations would re-open.
