Farmers in Kilkenny have sent fodder to those in Cavan who are experiencing a shortage of feed.

The fodder was organised by the IFA branches of Clara and Castlewarren and was transported to Blacklion in Co Cavan.

In total, over 120 bales are to be sent in three separate loads of 40 silage bales, 50 bales of hay and 40 bales of straw.

The first of the loads was sent last Friday, with more following on Tuesday and Thursday.

More loads of fodder are expected to be sent from the south and east to the west and northwest over the coming weeks.

The Department of Agriculture has revealed details of its fodder transport scheme and application form.

Any fodder imported from abroad is not eligible for assistance and pit silage is not covered by the measure, which is restricted to bales of hay, silage, haylage and straw for feeding.
