Charolais-sired calves are flying in Carrick-on-Shannon, with another hitting the €5,000 mark. Selling his orange and white was Martin Harold.

Another high-seller in the young Charolais heifer calf entries saw the McGowan brothers selling their entry for €4,000. Their yellow heifer was a first-prizewinner in the show on Sunday.

7.30pm: new leading price secured

A new leading price for the sale of €5,000 for an April-born Charolais heifer calf, owned by TJ Duffy and The Flatley brothers, was achieved. This orange CF52 sired heifer weighed 372kg.

This price was matched shortly after by another Charolais heifer calf, this time from Sean Hughes. Sire behind this January heifer was Lanzac and she weighed 553kg.

Lot 84, a second-prizewinner in the Hereford heifer class and weighing 644kg, sold for €2,100.

12.30pm: crowds return to showgrounds for winter fair sale

Huge crowds have returned to the Showgrounds in Carrick-on-Shannon on Monday for the sale section of the annual winter fair.

One of the first classes through the sales ring was for Charolais-cross heifers showing no permanent teeth. A number of high-end prices for the better-quality lots in this section saw the sale off to a very good start.

This section topped at €3,500 for lot 43, a powerful 19-month-old heifer from John Clyne.

Lot 48, a 640kg heifer by GRF out of a Simmental-cross cow, sold for €1,900.

The lot just before this, another senior heifer, sold for €2,350, while two other lots sold for €2,000 each.
