The Mayo Mule and Greyface Group’s premier ewe lamb sale held on Saturday last in Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart recorded a super clearance rate of 99%, with just 20 of the 2,089 head entered unsold.

The average price of €127 recorded was similar to last year’s trade.

Brisk trade

The sale started sharply and remained brisk for the first 1,400 to 1,500 lambs traded, with prices tapering off by €10 per head on average for the final 60 to 70 pens.

This stemmed from a number of buyers who were very active in the early part of the sale purchasing their required number.

While the reduction in competition eased prices by €10 per head on average, demand stayed firm with buyers who held off buying at the higher prices ramping up activity.

The majority of good-quality ewe lambs sold on the day ranged from €120 to €140 per head.

Eight or nine pens exceeded the €150 price mark rising to €165, while the first- and second-prizewinners sold for €200 and €210 per head. Lighter but nice-quality Mule ewe lambs sold from €105 upwards, while a selection of plainer-quality lots sold from €90 upwards.
