Met Éireann has issued a yellow rain warning for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford and Westmeath for Friday.

Rain will be followed by potentially heavy, thundery showers.

Rain accumulations of between 25mm and 40mm are expected, with a risk of localised flooding.

The warning is valid from 8am Friday 19 July until 8pm the same day.

Soil moisture deficit

Currently, the entire country is experiencing a soil moisture deficit, with slow grass growth reported in some parts of the south and east of the country.

  • -10mm to 0mm – poor trafficability
  • 1mm to 5mm - Light soils trafficable
  • 5mm to 10mm - Median soils trafficable
  • 10mm to 50mm - All soils trafficable
  • 50mm to 70mm - Growth more restricted
  • >75mm - Near drought or drought
  • While the rain will be welcome in some areas, some farmers will be hoping that it will move to the eastern half of the country.
