It proved to be a day to remember for the Barrett family of Togher, Co Cork, when two of their exhibits claimed the supreme champion as well as the overall Jersey championship at this year’s National Dairy Show in the Green Glens Arena in Millstreet.

The family has now claimed 11 overall championships at the national show – seven from the Jersey ring, along with a further four supreme Friesian champions.

Making the day even more special was the fact that their Jersey champion Laurelelm Glamour (phot below, left) claimed the overall championship for the breed for the third time running and a massive five times altogether, a record for either breed.

The now eight-year-old, who is classified EX95, is sired by Comerica and out of Potterswalls Resurrection Glam. Glamour, who calved this February, produced 6,926kg at 5.01% fat and 4.07% protein in her last lactation.

In the supreme championship, it was the family’s mature cow in milk winner Laurelelm Shottle Daffodil 2 (photo above, right) who came out triumphant.

The six-year-old Picston Shottle daughter was only ever shown once at a local show before making her impressive debut appearance at Millstreet.

Descending from one of the farm’s first-introduced family lines, which over the years have been graded up, Shottle Daffodil 2 is currently giving 45 litres, having calved last month after yielding in excess of 11,000kg of 4.51% fat and 3.35% protein in her last lactation.

Ricky and John Barrett were also awarded honourable mention in the supreme championship with their senior three-year-old cow in milk Laurelmore Wyman Lavender. A Pirolo Goldw Wyman ET daughter, she gave nearly 9,500kg of 5.12% fat and 3.15% in her first lactation.

While claiming the two top spots and honourable mention, the family also picked up the exhibitor-bred championship, premier exhibitor award, premier breeder award, the best udder and the best group of three award, meaning it certainly was a day to remember.

Claiming the reserve supreme championship under judge Meurig James was Drumlina Atwood Megan, owned by the syndicate of Boyd, Greenan, O’Neill, Timlin and Moore.

Sired by Maple Downs IGW Atwood, the four-year-old is no stranger to the show ring, having won the junior three category at the Emerald Expo earlier in the year. Calved 11 months, she is currently giving 35 litres, with last year’s yield exceeding 10,000kg of 4.22% fat and 3.32% protein.

Standing reserve in the Jersey ring was Ribblesdale Excitation Willow from Eamon and Helen McLoughney, Nenagh, Co Tipperary.

Classified EX94, this marks the fourth-calver’s second day out. Her first was at Tullamore this year, where she claimed the overall championship. Sired by Bridon Excitation and out of Ribblesdale Hot Willow, last year she gave 746kg at 5.91% fat and 3.69% protein. This finished a particularly successful day for the duo, which also claimed the junior Jersey champion and reserve earlier in the day.

It was Jane Arrell who took centre stage for the handler judging and she found her champion in Rachel McNamara, Newtownshandrum, Co Cork. Standing reserve was Megan Boal, Tuam, Co Galway, with honourable mention going to Carlow’s Amy Roche.
