The hammer fell at €1,850 for the champion female at the recent Waterford Blackface Sheep Breeders annual sale of female sheep held in Dungarvan Mart.
The sale, which has grown in popularity in recent years, witnessed a solid trade with in-lamb ewes averaging at €525 per head and dry hogget ewes averaging at €490 per head.
Donegal breeder Terence Maguire from Glencolmcille had the hard task of judging a strong entry of top-quality sheep.
Maguire judged an aged ewe offered by Billy and Craig Fraher, Co Waterford, as the winner of the aged ewe class, which sold for €1,560, with ewes offered by Pat and Pa Whyte, Co Waterford, placed in second and third position.

The first crop or in-lamb hogget class was won by a stylish ewe offered by Pat and Pa Whyte, with Craig Fraher placed second and the O’Sullivan brothers in third. Whyte’s ewe later went on to be judged the overall champion of the show before selling for the highest price of the night at €1,850.
The Whytes were among the top accolades again in the dry hogget class, with Craig Fraher in second, and Bryan Fraher in third.
The first-placed dry ewe hogget was also reserve champion of the sale and sold for the third highest price of €1,280 for the Whytes.
There were also notable high prices of €1,200 and €1,160 for sheep offered for sale by Tim and Lucy Harrington.
The general run of prices for more commercial-type ewes ranged from €220 to €440 per head.
