A new initiative for pre-schools has been launched by the National Dairy Council (NDC).

Targeted school milk trials will be conducted in 12 early learning and care settings in Carlow and Kilkenny under the ‘First 5’ initiative. The First 5 is a whole-of-Government strategy for babies, children and families.

The aim of the pilot is to cultivate and contribute to the development of healthy eating habits for pre-school children.

Positive impression

The trials will also help create a positive and lasting impression of dairy produce, while meeting the nutritional needs of pre-school children. Another aim of the trial is to connect children with agriculture and develop a greater understanding of where their food comes from.

During the trial, the children will be given a daily serving of milk, along with supporting Moo Crew booklets, posters, journals, stickers and jigsaws that emphasise the benefits of dairy.

Children will also receive a visit from a farmer and Milly the Cow.

The initiative is a cross-collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. The trials results will be examined by researchers from UCD and this will determine if the initiative will be rolled out nationwide.
