DEAR EDITOR
How lamentable to read someone of Colm McCarthy’s intellectual stature suggest that since the fear of Chernobyl has receded (“Interconnectors supplementing our energy needs”, 30 November 2025), Ireland should now embrace nuclear energy.
This is like the Government claiming to remain neutral while donating €100m for military support of Ukraine, bringing the 2025 total to €200m.
Cognitive dissonance in flagrant action – the disease of the age. Father, forgive them.
In March 2024, over 600 organisations from around the world signed a declaration that as a climate change solution, nuclear energy is too slow, too expensive and too dangerous: a position confirmed by increasing circulation of expert literature. Cleaner renewable energy growth is encouraging, despite setbacks like extravagant undemocratic data centre demand.
In July 2023, Colm McCarthy wrote a powerful piece for The Currency spelling out the unassailable €5bn economic case for not joining NATO.
He could at least make the same case for nuclear boondoggles, both about profiteering and potentially, mass destruction.
Lobbying is pervasive while, in my opinion, supposedly responsible bodies like the EPA and co hardly squeak, toeing misinformed or indifferent political lines.
People need to educate themselves for the sake of their health, environmental survival, and life for future generations.
