On Sunday, a story on tractor drivers and cyclists caused enormous debate on the Irish Farmers Journal Facebook page.

The Association of Farm and Forestry Contractors in Ireland (FCI) was before the committee this week and raised concerns over the growing number of cyclists using the road, particularly at the weekend.

Under proposed new legislation, cyclists must be given a 1.5m space when overtaking.

“This would be difficult if not impossible to achieve with tractors on many N (national) and R (regional) grade roads,” the FCI said.

Since the piece, there has been enormous reaction with cyclists coming out against tractor drivers and tractor drivers coming out against cyclists.

A question about the right of cyclists to be on the road was raised by Brian McGivney.

David Flanagan and Martin Fitzpatrick pointed out that cyclists do not always adhere to the rules of the road.

A frustrated tractor driver posted a photo in the comments.

Others said that cyclists should pay road tax and insurance.

Some people defended the cyclists.
