Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue has called for applications to join the Teagasc Authority from people who “consider that they possess the skills, knowledge and experience” to join the board.

The 11-member Authority includes representatives from the farming organisations, the food industry, universities, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Teagasc staff.

The current board is chaired by Liam Herlihy, chair of FBD Holdings and former chair of Glanbia Plc, Ornua and ICOS.

Dairy farmer Donald Scully was nominated by the ICMSA to the board, while former Aurivo chair and dairy farmer Patrick Duffy was nominated by ICOS.

Brian Rushe is a dairy farmer and current deputy president of the Irish Farmers’ Association.

Macra’s nominee is John Buckey, a dairy farmer and former FBD Young Farmer of the Year.

Prof Gerald Fitzgerald is CEO of Food for Health Ireland.

Consultant Elizabeth Reynolds worked with GlaxoSmithKline for 24 years around the world.

Martina Donnelly, Teagasc business and technology advisor is the Teagasc staff representative.

Professor Thia Hennessy is chair of Agri-Food Economics and Dean of Cork University Business School at UCC, while Liam Woulfe

is MD of fertiliser company Grassland AGRO and Freshgrass Group.

Louise Byrne is the deputy chief inspector in the Department of Agriculture and current chief plant health officer for Ireland, and she is the Department representative on the Teagasc Authority.

Potential candidates

Potential candidates are required to come from a senior level in the agriculture and food sector and they should have evidence of:

  • A demonstrable understanding of the agriculture and food industry
  • Experience of research and development in the food and the food processing industry
  • Scientific and practical knowledge of relevance to the agricultural and food industry
  • The Minister is also looking for people who have an understanding of the climate challenges confronting the Irish agriculture and food sector; Corporate governance and compliance experience; previous board membership; previous experience on an audit/risk committee and financial experience.

    The closing date for applications is 3pm on Thursday, 31 August 2023.

    Appointments to the Teagasc Authority will be for an initial period of five years, with the option to extend this by a second term.

    Successful candidates will receive €11,970 in remuneration, and travel and subsistence at civil service rates.

    The board meets monthly for 11 months of the year, with additional sub-committee meetings.
