Out of the 49,721 farmers involved in the GLAS scheme, a total of 12% are waiting on payments after passing all their approval checks.
The information was revealed by Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed in response to a parliamentary question from Fianna Fáil spokesperson for agriculture Charlie McConalogue.
The top five counties where farmers had passed GLAS checks but were waiting on payments were:
Mayo – 892 farmers.Galway – 753 farmers.Kerry – 461 farmers.Cork – 402 farmers.Donegal – 392 farmers.Galway has the highest and Mayo the second highest number of participants in the GLAS scheme.
The biggest issue seems to be with delivering GLAS I payments, which was rolled out in 2015, as some 362 farmers in Mayo were waiting for approved payments, while 379 farmers in Galway were awaiting payments from GLAS I.
With payments initially beginning to farmers nearly two months ago, the delays in getting monies paid is putting an increased financial burden on farmers.
