China – financial support boost

Chinese authorities pledged to strengthen the use of monetary policy tools to support agriculture and to give greater support to major research projects and leading agricultural companies.

Mexico – GM ban

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said she expects the country’s parliament to approve a ban on planting genetically modified (GM) corn in Mexico by the end of February.

Brazil – China beef investigation

Brazil could be the country most at risk from the Chinese investigation into beef imports, which it suggests have “seriously damaged” domestic production. Brazil accounts for over 40% of Chinese beef imports.

Britain – day of unity

British farming unions have called for a national day of unity on 25 January, which will see farmers gather in towns across the UK to protest against inheritance tax changes and thank the public for their support.
