The number of thefts that occurred in Ireland last year was up 8% on 2016 levels. There were nearly 70,000 ‘theft and related offences’ in 2017 .

There were also over 19,000 ‘burglary and related offences’, which represents an increase of over 3% on 2016.

The figures were released as part of the Central Statistics Office’s compilation of recorded crimes.

Thefts and burglaries are some of the most common crimes in the report. The highest is theft (69.788), followed by public order offences (31,188) and then damages to property and the environment (23,294).
