The maximum use rate of the post-emergence broadleaved weed herbicide Galaxy is set to be reduced from 1.5l/ha to 1.0l/ha later in 2019.

However, for most weeds, rates of between 0.75l/h and 1.0l/ha mixed with other herbicides, such as an SU, generally covers most weeds.

Where growers have issues with resistant corn marigold, rates of between 1.25l/ha and 1.5l/ha are generally required.

New stock

These changes come into effect with new stock sold this year that contains the PCS number 05473. Stock with the old PCS number (02948) is cleared for use at rates of up to 1.5l/ha until the end of September.

Therefore, stock containing the old PCS number should be used up first this spring.

Resistant corn marigold control

Chemical control of the weed can prove a challenge.

Issues with resistant corn marigold are coming in parts of Wexford. However, pockets of the weeds have been found in parts of Cork and Tipperary.

Overall, chemical control of resistant corn marigold remains limited.

Speaking at the Whelehan Crop Protection technical update, technical manager Chris Maughan said the key to corn marigold control is to get the weed early.

Weeds at the rosette stage are still in the vegetative stage.

Challenge

Weed control becomes a much greater challenge when weeds switch to the reproductive stages and increase in size.

Rates of Galaxy at 1.0l/ha are more effective when the weed is small in size.

While the product rate of Galaxy has been reduced, the active loading rate hasn’t, meaning other products can be mixed to make the active shortfall with the new reduced rates.

Resistant corn marigold control requires a targeted approach

The grassland herbicide Pastor Trio has now received clearance for cereal usage and contains fluroxypyr, clopyralid and florasulam.

The product can be mixed with Galaxy to make up the required amount which will provide good control of the weed.

Another option is Gartrel, a new herbicide to the market this year which contains florasulam and clopyralid. This can also be mixed with Galaxy and will provide good control.

Resistant corn marigold control requires a targeted approach for any area of the field affected by the weed.
