The highest direct payment in 2019 went to O’Shea Farms Unlimited Company in Co Kilkenny, newly published figures from the Department of Agriculture show.

The horticulture and tillage farm in Piltown, Co Kilkenny, produces primarily carrots and potatoes and received a direct payment of €226,440, a slight decrease of €3,200 on its 2018 payment. The farm received an additional €32,000 for investment in physical assets.

The figures relate to the EU's financial year which runs from 16 October 2018 to 15 October 2019 and correspond to the payments farmers received in 2018.

The next largest payment went to Godolphin Ireland UC in Co Kildare. It is the thoroughbred racing and breeding operation of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice-president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.

The stud farm received a payment of €216,768, placing it second on the list. An additional €16,237 has been claimed by Godolphin this year compared with 2018 when it placed 13th.

Goodman

In third is Branganstown Farms Limited in Co Louth, the farm in which Larry Goodman and members of his family are directors. It received a payment of €214,578, a fall of €4,000 on the previous year.

In addition to Branganstown, Goodman is also involved in Glydee Farms Limited in Co Louth which received a significant payment of €185,113.

While the value of this payment fell by almost €10,000 on 2018, the total direct payment to the two farms was just shy of €400,000.

Over €200,000

Frank and Threasa Joyce in Co Meath had the fourth-highest payment at €211,649. The farm in Co Meath increased its payment by €17,481 on the year before.

Completing the top five is the Park Farms Partnership, which claimed a direct payment of €207,984. Based in Carlow, it has slipped one place on last year after its direct payment was reduced by €12,580.

In total, it received €265,686, including €52,702 for investment in physical assets and €5,000 for agri-environmental schemes.

Also on the list with payments over €200,000 are Cyril Goode, a vet and pedigree cattle breeder from Arklow, Co Wicklow, who received €207,013, and William Aherne who farms at Synone Dairy Farm in Cashel, Co Tipperary, claiming €206,150.

Top 10

Completing the top 10 are Louis A Mcauley (1976) Ltd, a tillage farm in Co Meath, which also operates a feed mill receiving a payment of €195,596, Paul Carr in Co Donegal who claimed €195,310 and €194,892 to Patrick Reynolds in Co Meath.
