Irish Country Living caught up with Joe Mahady of the Round Tower Men’s Shed in Killala this week. The group formed their alliance back in 2015 with the aim of tackling social isolation in their rural Mayo village.

“We were very impressed by the men’s shed movement and felt this ethos would fit perfectly into our community,” says Joe. He along with five of his friends set about acquiring a premises for their new shed. At first this was no easy task but generosity from the local community prevailed and the men established their club in the local parish priest’s garage.

As numbers grew the garage was no longer fit to serve its purpose. The men now rent a commercial premises beside the fishing harbour in the rural village of Killala. The shed now has 11 active members who can work on various projects or just come in and have a chat over a cup of tea.

“A local fundraiser is taking place next week with a darts competition being held. The men are busy making a trophy to be presented to the winner of this competition. We decided to make a replica of the local round tower and can’t wait to unveil the detailed craftsmanship carried out by our members.

“We have a good mix of retired and working men here at the Round Tower Men’s Shed. I run a suckler and beef farm myself. It’s great to get chatting to lads from a wide range of professions. We have retired accountants, engineers and nurses here at the shed. We welcome everyone from all walks of life.

“The shed has had a great impact on the men. We have become a close-knit group and everyone really enjoys the camaraderie. Previously, most members’ only interaction was a quick passing hello. Now we always get to have a good chat.”

The shed is always open to new members. Anyone interested in joining should contact Joe Mahady on 086 809 5529. The shed is open on Monday and Thursday evenings from 8-10.30pm.
