Gardaí told the Irish Farmers Journal that they are investigating the theft of 30 bales from a farmyard at Esker near Athenry, Co Galway.
The theft occurred between the 25 and 27 of January 2018. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses that would have seen unusual activity in the area around Esker between these dates. They can contact Athenry Garda station on 091-844 016.
The theft took place as multiple areas of the west and northwest suffer fodder shortages, with some sellers asking for up to €50/bale.
Higher prices make silage a more attractive commodity for criminals to steal and resell.
The Government has introduced a support scheme and the IFA has paired counties across the country to facilitate the long-distance movement of fodder to areas facing the worst shortages.
