Despite the large numbers of commercials on display it proved to be a day for a pedigree champion with Kieran Mullarkey, Grange, Co Sligo receiving the interbreed championship with Tawley Gretta.
This January 2015 born heifer, sired by Monaduff Snorther had earlier in the day claimed top spot in the Simmental ring. Mullarkey also picked up the Reserve Simmental championship with a first calver cow.
In the Charolais section, Judge Eimear McGovern selected a September 2015 born heifer as her champion .Tullaghan Limelight, owned by Cathal Owen Daly from Bundoran Co Donegal is sired by Elgin Davinci.
Reserve champion in this section was then awarded to Kieran Daly’s Excellent sired, January 2016 bull calf “Mister Muscle”.
Champion Angus on the day was awarded to Owenmore Mella, a yearling heifer sired by stock-bull Owenmore Kit and owned by Antony Scanlon.
Commercial section
Judge Afron Jones was put to the test in the commercial section, with large classes and good quality line-up’s –he selected the February-born, heifer calf Daisy, sired by Boherard Catona and owned by Pearse McNamee, Raphoe, Co Donegal as his champion. Daisy then went on to receive the Reserve Interbreed of the show.
Also taking place in the commercial section was the highly competitive class of breeding heifers. From a fantastic line up of ten heifers, it was Martin Harold from Co Donegal who took top spot with a Limousin cross heifer.
Interbreed
In an Interbreed line-up made up of the Simmental, Charolais, Angus and Commercial Champions and judged by a combined panel of the day’s judges – Simmental Champion, Tawley Gretta for Kieran Mullarkey was tapped forward as Interbreed champion, followed by the Commercial Champion, selected as reserve champion of the show.
Also taking place on the day, the annual young handler’s class was judged by sister duo Eimear and Orlaith McGovern, with Siobhan Brennan, Cloonacool, Co Sligo being brought into first position in a highly contested class of youngsters.
