There are plenty of tillage events on at this time of the year.

There will be loads of valuable information at all these events. More importantly, it gives you an opportunity to meet with fellow farmers and industry.

Here are some of the events we have in the diary at the minute.

UFU/UAS/CAFRE Arable conference – 25 January

The Ulster Farmers Union (UFU) and the Ulster Arable Society (UAS) come together every year to host the annual arable conference at CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus.

The keynote speaker on the day is chairperson of the Agricultural Trust and chairperson of the Food Vision tillage group Matt Dempsey.

VJ Bhaskar (Teagasc) and Siobhán Hillman (AHDB) will bring attendees the latest grass weed research, while Lisa Black from AFBI will display results from research into organic manures.

There will be a European update from Jenny Burton of the National Farmers’ Union and Ed Horton will talk about his experience with biological farming. There will also be an update on the AHDB levy system.

Teagasc National Tillage conference – 31 January

Teagasc will host its national tillage conference on 31 January. This year, there will be a focus on practical advice for farmers.

Results of the winter planting survey will be displayed. This will be followed by advice on planting and rotation and there will be a panel discussion.

This will be followed by quick research insights. The next session will focus on opportunities to add value to produce from the tillage sector.

After lunch, the conference will take a different direction to usual. There will be five interactive workshops and attendees can participate in three of these.

The workshop topics are as follows:

  • Are there synergies for the tillage and dairy sector?
  • What do the 2030 Food Vision tillage group recommendations mean for the sector?
  • Getting to grips with grassweeds.
  • Disease control decisions for 2024.
  • Getting the most out of your bean crop.
  • The conference take place in Lyrath Estate Hotel. Registration is from 9am. Attendees are required to register before the event. The conference begins at 9.45am and closes at 4.15pm.

    Teagasc spring seminars

    Teagasc will host a series of spring tillage seminars over January and February. The focus is on action needed for poor winter crops, spring crop options, nutrient management and new fertiliser register, plus spring seed availability.

    These meetings are being held across the country. Some were held last week, but the majority take place at the end of January and February. Click on this link to find your nearest meeting.

    Malting barley conference

    Teagasc will host its malting barley conference on Tuesday 20 February from 10.30am to 1pm in the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford.

    Johnny Roberts from Boortmalt will talk about 'Mapping the way forward towards reducing carbon emissions'.

    Rebecca Bailey of Teagasc will display results from the Teagasc/Boortmalt joint programme.

    Edward Burgess from Teagasc will talk about nitrates loss to water from tillage land and Richie Hackett of Teagasc will talk about solutions to nitrate loss from spring barley systems. There will also be a talk on malting barley varieties for 2024.
