The bullock trade was steady at Kilkenny mart on Thursday. According to mart manager George Candler, “there was a small supply of cull cows which helped sharpen prices but plain heifers were more difficult to get away”.
Bullocks above 600kg ranged from €1.95/kg to €2.30/kg, with a 775kg Limousin making €1,750 on the day.
Mid-weight males sold for between €1.80/kg and €2.40/kg, while lighter ones under 400kg sold for between €320 and €680 over the weight. A 355kg Charolais made €925 on the day.
As for cull cows, Friesian animals sold for between €1.05/kg and €1.75/kg. Continental cull cows sold for between €1.40/kg and €2.10/kg.
Beef heifers, which saw a slower trade, sold for €600 to €975 over the weight, with the top-weight animal, a 775kg Limousin, making €1,750 or nearly €1,000 with the weight.
Forward store heifers went for between €2/kg and €2.45/kg, or €500 to €650 over the weight, while a 385kg light store heifer Limousin made €1,045/kg, or €2.71/kg on the day.
