The United States Environmental Protection Agency has formed an opinion that glyphosate “is not likely to be carcinogenic in humans”.
This may change attitudes and affect court judgments against the chemical.
The finding infers that Monsanto would have been wrong to have included a cancer warning on its Roundup labels, and impacts on the State of California’s insistence that the glyphosate products carry a carcinogen warning.
The lack of such a warning was a key factor in recent massive judgments against Monsanto in California.
This judgment may strengthen the hand of Bayer (Monsanto’s new owner) in its defence of huge judgments given against the product recently.
The finding echoed the European Food Safety Authority’s stance regarding glyphosate.
