In an interview with viEUws, the EU policy broadcaster, Mr Lamy says tariffs on agricultural food will have to be cut.

Mr Lamy, former Director General of the World Trade Organisation, made the comments while attending a conference in Brussels on the future of agriculture.

When asked about the theme of the conference, “sustainable intensification” he said the challenge is to produce more food, different food and addressing increased demand for quality and safety.

Mr Lamy also said the agriculture should intensify “in a consumer and citizen friendly way”.

He said the capacity to harness the supply/demand relationship between producers and consumers has been poorly managed in the past and that farm trade has been distorted by tariff and subsidies.

Mr Lamy said these and other challenges, including dealing with excessive amount of food wasted along the the production chain, will have to be addressed in the coming decades.
