Emergency services in Derry responded to a large fire at a grain shed in Foyle Port on Wednesday 29 July. The blaze began in the Waterside area at 10.57am and was extinguished by 7.35pm that evening.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen throughout the city and across the border in Donegal.

William Johnston from the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service said: “At the height of the incident, 15 appliances and approximately 60 firefighters were in attendance, including high-reach aerial appliances.

“Our firefighters worked quickly to bring the incident under control, wearing breathing apparatus and using a range of jets to extinguish the fire.

“There were no casualties and the swift action of crews ensured that neighbouring properties were protected and damage was minimised. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
