There was heavy snowfall on Thursday 1 March in the east of the country as a result of Storm Emma which made for difficult farming and driving conditions.

Johnny O'Brien's car got stuck in a snow drift in Meath and was rescued by photographer Barry Cronin who got there ahead of local farmer Bernard Maguire and his tractor.

JJ Meade, who is pictured here driving the snow plough, also arrived on the scene with a snow plough and cleared major routes between Slane and Rathkenny, Co. Meath.

Barry also captured video from Castletown and College Hill in Co Meath as well as Ardee and Collon in Co Louth.

The images here are likely to repeated across many parts of the country in the coming days as blizzard like conditions hit the country.

A status red snow-ice warning remains in place for Munster, Leinster, Connacht, Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan. Counties in Northern Ireland have been issued with an amber warning by the Met Office.

Met Éireann has warned that exceptional accumulations, up to 1m in parts, of snowfall could hit the east.
