Saturday saw a large sale at Balla Mart of close to 1,100 cattle ahead of Monday’s suspension of all sales at Aurivo Marts until at least the end of the month.
The trade was strong and steady, with prices slightly stronger for weanlings. Bullocks over 600kg sold from €2.00/kg to €2.10/kg for average-quality types, with the top third selling for €2.20/kg on average.
Compared to last week, prices were on par, but plainer-quality heavy bullocks were easier by €20 to €30/head.
Forward steers from 500kg to 600kg were a steady trade on last week, with prices averaging around €2.20/kg. U grades made €2.35/kg to €2.45/kg.
Steers from 400kg to 500kg sold for €2.20/kg on average, with U grades making €2.50/kg. In comparison to last week’s trade, prices were on par, with the top third of bullocks seeing a slightly stronger trade.
Weanling bulls
The weanling bull trade was very strong, with prices up on last week’s levels. Bulls from 300kg to 400kg sold for just shy of €2.60/kg on average, up 6c/kg or €18 to €24/head on last week. The top third in terms of quality sold from €2.80/kg to €3.00/kg, again up slightly on last week.
Bulls from 200kg to 300kg were a much stronger trade. Average-quality types sold for €2.72/kg on average, with the top third making €3.10/kg on average.
Heifers
The heifer trade was a little easier than last week. Heifers from 500kg to 600kg sold for €2.20/kg, down nearly 10c/kg on last week. The top third were still a strong trade and sold for over €2.40/kg on average, down slightly on last week. The bottom third sold from €2.00/kg to €2.10/kg. Stores from 400kg to 500kg sold for €2.26/kg, down slightly on last week also. The top third sold for €2.50/kg.
Weanling heifers from 300kg to 400kg sold for €2.60/kg on average, up 3c/kg on last week with the top third selling from €2.50/kg to €2.70/kg, up slightly on last week. The bottom third in terms of quality saw prices dip by 8c/kg on last week. Heifers from 200kg to 300kg were a little easier, selling from €2.50/kg to €2.60/kg for average-quality types. The top third made €3.00/kg, the same as last week.
Weanling bulls strong but heifers easier at Carnew
Saturday’s sale at Carnew Mart saw a similar trend to Balla. Weanlings were by far the strongest trade, with prices edging up on last week. Stores were a little easier.
Bullocks from 500kg to 600kg were a slightly improved trade, with average-quality types selling for €2.03/kg, up 6c/kg or €30/head on last week. The top third were a steady trade, selling for €2.24/kg. The bottom third sold for €1.76/kg.
Bullocks from 400kg to 500kg saw prices drop on last week’s levels, with prices averaging €1.88/kg. Friesian crosses sold from €1.30/kg to €1.50/kg. Angus bullocks sold from €1.70/kg to €2.00/kg, with continentals selling from €2.30/kg to €2.40/kg.
Bulls over 400kg were an improved trade, with prices up by more than €30/head on last week. Those from 300kg to 400kg were a steady trade selling, for €2.27/kg for average-quality types. The top third sold for €2.50/kg.

The trade for heifers was a little easier, with those from 500kg to 600kg selling from €1.80/kg to €1.90/kg on average. The top third sold for €2.10/kg.
Heifers from 400kg to 500kg sold mainly from €1.80/kg to €2.00/kg for average-quality types. The top third sold from €2.20/kg to €2.25/kg.
