Financial support for rural Ireland in this month’s Budget has been welcomed by the Western Development Commission as it marks 25 years of driving socio-economic growth in the west of Ireland.
The Department of Rural and Community Development has allocated €235m to rural communities under the Our Rural Future initiative, a move that was welcomed at an event in Co Leitrim marking the Western Development Commission’s (WDC) quarter of a century in existence earlier this month.
The WDC’s Regional Development Summit, held at Lough Rynn Castle near Mohill, heard from Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment Dara Calleary as well as Dr Ernesto Sirollis, a renowned global leader in community and economic development who gave the keynote address.
Shortcomings
Commenting on the Budget, which was announced in the days leading up to the summit, Mr Mulrooney said several aspects were to be welcomed as having the potential to drive growth and development throughout Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, Galway, and Clare.
“Budget 2025 makes important strides for rural Ireland, with €235 million allocated to the revitalisation of rural communities under Our Rural Future,” he said.
“This investment, including the LEADER Programme and Town and Village Renewal Schemes, is critical for addressing infrastructure and connectivity challenges in the west and northwest.”
“We welcome the renewed focus on supporting indigenous firms and the startup ecosystem, especially in rural areas like the northwest, where these sectors can drive economic growth.”
The Economic Impact and Regional report, commissioned by the WDC and prepared by Indecon, highlights notable successes, such as job creation, economic growth, and enhanced third-level educational provision since the WDC was set up in 1999.
However it also identifies continued and persistent gaps in income and housing for those living in rural Ireland along with the shortcomings associated with infrastructure outside of urban settings.
“While we’ve achieved a lot in the last 25 years, the western and northwestern region is at a tipping point,” added Alan.
“Our report shows that with strategic investment and collaboration, we can build on this foundation to create an even more prosperous and sustainable future for the area.”
