Monday morning’s sale in Tuam saw a good entry of bullocks, heifers and a number of dry cows. It was the first sale in which both rings ran simultaneously with online bidding available through the MartBids bidding platform.
Bullocks
Bullocks from 400kg to 500kg averaged €2.09/kg. Friesian types made from €1.30/kg to €1.65/kg while Angus and Hereford crosses from the dairy herd were making €1.80/kg to €2/kg. Suckler-bred Charolais and Limousin types averaged €2.28/kg.
In the 500kg to 600kg weight range the average price was similar at €2.07/kg. Good-quality Charolais and Limousin types were averaging around the €2.20/kg mark, with Angus dairy crosses making around the €1.85/kg to €1.90/kg mark.
Bullocks over 600kg averaged €2.08/kg, with Charolais and Limousin stock trading around €2.10/kg to €2.15/kg in the main, while first-cross dairy stock were 25c/kg to 35c/kg behind this.
This June 2018-born Shorthorn bullock weighed 610kg and sold for €1,200 (€1.97/kg).
This April 2019-born Angus bullock weighed 550kg and sold for €1,130 (€2.05/kg).
This March 2019-born Angus bullock weighed 555kg and sold for €1,140 (€2.05/kg).
Heifers
Heifers weighing 400kg to 500kg averaged €2.10/kg. Plainer types struggled to break the €2/kg mark, while the top third of stock averaged €2.34/kg. In the 500kg to 600kg weight range the average price was €2/kg, while those weighing 600kg+ averaged €1.90/kg.
This August 2019-born Charolais heifer weighed 510kg and sold for €1,100 (€2.16/kg).
This August 2019-born Simmental heifer weighed 475kg and sold for €1,080 (€2.27/kg).
This April 2019-born Simmental bullock weighed 625kg and sold for €1,330 (€2.13/kg).
This April 2019-born Limousin bullock weighed 545kg and sold for €1,140 (€2.09/kg).
Dry cows
Dry cow’s averaged €1.56/kg, with good-quality, suckler-bred cows who were carrying a decent level of flesh making from €1.80/kg to €2.05/kg. Thinner or first-cross dairy types were trading at aroun €1.35/kg to €1.55/kg.
