A special livestock auction was held in aid of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland on Saturday. The auction was organised by the Mount Melleray Community Silage Group and the Grass Gals, and was kindly hosted by Cashel Mart.

€20.000 was raised on the day, bringing the total amount raised by the groups to an incredible €35,000.

In total 60 different lots went under the hammer, all of which were donated free of charge. Items for sale included 18 cattle, a signed Irish rugby jersey, silage and straw, various pieces of farm equipment and clothing etc.

One of the most notable animals sold was a Hereford bullock called Ray Darcy. The bullock was three months old, weighed around 250kg and raised €1,850, which is three times more than the usual selling price.

Earlier in the year, the "Grass Gals" raised €14,000 for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland in a silage-cutting world record attempt.
