Agriculture has been highlighted as one of the main sources of water contamination in the latest Water Indicators’ Report from the Environment Protection Agency (EPA).
E coli bacteria in groundwater supplies and excess nutrients entering rivers and streams as a result of poor farm practices were pointed out in the report.
Nutrients
“Pollution caused by excess nutrients entering waters remains a key challenge.
“These nutrients come predominantly from our farms, towns and villages,” Andy Fanning, programme manager with the EPA stated.
A new agricultural sustainability and support programme is in the process of being rolled out from June this year.
