Dairy production is associated with a greater risk of environmental degradation, the climate council report says.

It notes that dairy production generates, on average, twice the level of greenhouse gas emissions per hectare as beef production, while negatively affecting biodiversity.

However, it notes that dairy production is “currently economically viable” and did not recommend cuts to the dairy herd.

The council says further expansion of the dairy herd “should only occur within environmental limitations” and it should not increase the risk of adverse environmental impacts at farm and catchment scales.

The report also says that the Nitrates Derogation review may play an important role in ensuring that dairy production is maintained within environmental limitations.
