Weekends mean different things to different people.
For some it’s a time of relaxation (definitely not the case for farmers mid-calving or lambing though), for others it means a night out on the tiles and then there are the walkers.
For these people who like to get out in the fresh air and move, we’ve got three hiking options for you.
The 12 O’Clock Hills
The 12 O’Clock Hills are located outside the village of Kilkishen in east Clare. There is a spacious car park at the beginning at Belvoir Trailhead.
From here, you can do three looped hikes - a 5k, 8.5k or 13k. The 8.5k is a good moderate to easy hike and takes about two hours.
The views from the top over the nearby mountains and lakes are lovely. Boots would be advisable, especially in winter, but it’s also possible to do it in runners.
Djouce Mountain
Really, Co Wicklow is a hiker’s paradise. There are so many options to choose from and Glendalough has to be one of the best-known hiking spots. Undoubtedly, its beauty is breathtaking.
However, nearby and a little less busy but equally as beautiful is Djouce.
There are two places you can park for this hike, one closer to the trailhead and a more spacious car park further down. It’s an out and back hike, with mostly a boardwalk trail that is of moderate difficulty. It’s 8k and will take you roughly three hours. Boots are advisable.
Diamond Hill
A hike up Diamond Hill in Co Galway offers a view of some of the best scenery in Connemara. It’s a 7k, two- to three-hour looped trail.
The hike begins at the Connemara National Park Visitor Centre. It’s made up of gravel path, boardwalk and steps. It's moderate to strenuous in places.
The ascent is more difficult than descent, so, if weather conditions permit, it’s worth going all the way to the top. From there, you can take in Kylemore Abbey.
Always remember to stay safe when hiking. The hike is going nowhere - if conditions aren’t right, you can come back another day. Always tell someone where you are going. Remember to bring water and snacks.
