Mitsubishi Motors will lead the 4x4 presence at this year’s Grass & Muck 2016 event with a host of new 4x4s, including the latest L200 crew and single cab pickup, the upgraded Pajero model and a very cost-effective new Outlander Business.
The new Mitsubishi L200, introduced in 2015, is one of the most modern-looking 4x4 crew cabs on the market and will be the highlight of the exhibit. This new pickup has set new standards in 4x4 pickup fuel economy, cutting fuel usage by about 17% compared with the previous model, as well as most of the competition. During Irish Farmers Journal testing in 2015, the L200 was clearly the most economical 4x4 pickup in the fuel economy tests.
Engine power is provided by an upgraded 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine that pumps out 181bhp and 320Nm of torque. The new L200 has improved towing ability, now rated at 3,100kg up by 100kg.
This improved economy has been achieved by a new, 30kg lighter and more efficient four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine coupled with changes to the structure of its 4x4 pickup. The new L200 uses a higher level of high tensile steel for lower weight and added strength.
The Mitsubishi L200 can be fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox or a more impressive five-speed automatic that’s smooth in operation. The interior space is bigger than before with more head and legroom. It comes with a tilt and telescopic steering wheel adjustment.
The L200 uses the Mitsubishi SS4-II Super Select full-time four-wheel-drive system that gives impressive cornering stability on paved roads. Drivers can choose from four driving modes by rotating the new drive mode selector, making off-road driving a pleasure. Active stability and traction control with trailer stability assist, hill start assist systems and lane departure warning provide the driver with impressive safety technology rarely seen in other crew can 4x4 pickups.
The L200 standard kit now includes reversing camera with sensors, touchscreen audio display, hill start assist, trailer stability assist, and cruise control with speed limiter, dual zone air-conditioning, rear privacy glass, electric folding door mirrors, auto dimming rear view mirror, LED daytime running with Xenon lights and new 17in alloy wheels.
Pajero power
The Mitsubishi Pajero has also experienced a recent upgrade with a new impressive interior specification with the highest ever level of equipment which includes a smooth five-speed automatic gearbox. There is a large satnav screen that doubles as the viewer for the reversing camera. And leather seating is also standard.
This latest-generation Pajero uses what is now a proven 3.2-litre turbo-diesel engine. The engine power is rated at 200bhp, with more engine torque than most of the competition. You get a lot of 4x4 in terms of capacity and features with the new generation Executive badge and that includes a 3.5t towing capacity.
The Pajero comes with Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4 II transmission which offers four driving modes, 2H rear-wheel drive, 4H full-time four-wheel drive, 4HLc that locks up the centre differential, and 4LLC for extreme low-ratio off-road work. The 2H mode with a new drive system can deliver up 3% better in fuel economy compared with the older models.
Outlander is competitive business
The third Mitsubishi 4x4 model that farmers and contractors visiting FTMTA Grass & Muck 2016 will be interested in is the new Outlander Business. This is a new two-seat commercial vehicle fitted with an efficient 4x4 system and powered by a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine.
This impressive engine delivers 150bhp and 380Nm of torque. The Outlander is thrifty and claims a fuel economy figure of 19km/litre (53.2mpg) and can still tow up to 2,000kg.
The Outlander uses Mitsubishi’s Auto Stop & Go technology called Cleartec. It comes with a new Eco driving mode that allows drivers to achieve an impressive level of fuel economy.
