Belclare sheep continue to grow in popularity, with commercial farmers looking to maximise profits through increased lamb production. The breed has progressed through the hard work of dedicated breeders, from being regarded as a replacement breed to now being able to rival the terminal breeds as well. This year records were smashed at the Society’s premier sale, with ram lambs selling to €2,900 and hogget rams to €1,620.
The Belclare breed will be strongly represented at the Ploughing this year, with some outstanding sheep on display, and plenty of breeders on hand to answer any questions. There will be three more Belclare Sales this year at Blessington 23 September, Kilkenny 25 September and Roscommon 30 September.
