Irish students prioritise inclusion, sustainability, and workplace diversity in their career aspirations.

A new study, conducted for Munster Technological Universities’ LGBTQ+ FLAG week, and sponsored by TELUS Digital, provided insights into students’ career aspirations, workplace preferences, and values regarding diversity, inclusion, and social responsibility.

When asked about their ideal workplace, 45% of respondents indicated a preference for large multinational corporations. Meanwhile, 24% said they want to work for small to medium enterprises (SMEs), 16% expressed a desire to be self-employed, and 11% said they would like to work in start-ups, the public sector, or government.

“It is vital for businesses to understand and align with the expectations of new graduates to attract and retain top talent in Ireland’s competitive job market,” says Logan Davidson, global account manager, TELUS Digital Ireland.

Diversity and inclusion remain a priority for students entering the workforce, with 73% emphasising mental health awareness and support as critical. Additionally, 60% consider gender equality to be a key workplace value, while 44% prioritise disability awareness.

Social responsibility

Sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) also play a role in employment decisions, with 59% of students stating they are more likely to apply to organisations that promote sustainable and responsible business practices.

“As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it’s empowering to know there are companies out there that care about creating inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive.

“Diversity in the workplace isn’t just about representation; it’s about fostering an environment of mutual respect, understanding, and support,” says Mattilie Browne, third-year software development student. and chairperson of the MTU LGBT+ society in the Cork campuses.

When asked how long they anticipate job-seeking, 53% said they expect to find employment within four months.
