This Christmas, my style is ... edgy!

That hard-to-define “edgy” look tends to be a fusion of multiple influences; cool hipster, daring street style, retro chic, but more than anything, it’s created with a strong sense of individuality. Those with an edgy style are not afraid to take a risk. They make it look so easy, as if it’s effortlessly put together but, as with all distinctive styles, it’s carefully selected.

The gal with that edgy style will mix unexpected textures together; delicate sequins with chunky knitwear, she’ll rock a fluid, feminine dress with masculine style brogues or opt for an oversized jacket and wear it with a skin tight piece. Rather than choosing the predictable or current trends, edgy style is about thinking outside the box. She’ll add an unusual element that injects an eclectic edge into her look. She’s the one wearing fishnet socks with tailored trousers, a studded bracelet with a check shacket. She blends sophisticated with sporty, punk with posh. She is the mistress of the mix.

Attitude For me, the lover of an edgy look has one of the greatest things you could have when it comes to style. No, it’s not the little black dress, nor indeed is it the perfect white blouse. It is—drum roll please!—attitude. She dresses for herself, enjoys looking different from the herd and is daring in her choices. All because she owns her style.

Those elements of difference may be subtle or statement, but always interesting. As edgy style is striking and strong, the key elements of that wardrobe will be striking too. Almost any leather or faux leather piece is a go-to staple — the perfect strong texture for a strong look. Very often, leather trousers, leggings or a jacket provides the starting point.

METALLIC finishes catch the eye; shimmering cowboy boots worn with a short dress give a playful vibe. Footwear tends to be chunky rather than delicate.

JEWELLERY can be layered, with an eclectic mix of styles and textures. HATS One of the easiest ways to stand out from the crowd is to wear a hat. Be it a fedora or a beanie, the choice is yours. Not only does it make a statement, but it also adds texture.

OVERSIZED The edgy dresser doesn’t follow the usual gender rules. Oversized masculine pieces give her look a cool, laid-back vibe, so get raiding his wardrobe!

Black is often the colour of choice as it’s the perennial favourite of fashion. It’s cool, sophisticated and adds drama. Black is the perfect backdrop to make your accessory choices stand out and ideal for those who prefer a minimalist approach to style.
