The Jersey lily has a knack of appearing in a few days. One week there is no sign of it – no leaves and no flower stems – and a week later it is in flower, creating a lovely surprise. It seems that the bulbs from which the flowers appear lie dormant in the soil, the leaves having withered away in early summer, until the weather in autumn gets a bit cooler and rain percolates down around the bulbs. Once flowering is triggered, between mid-September and mid-October, it happens very fast.
