A man has been arrested outside Liffey Meats in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, where independent farmers are currently protesting against beef prices.

In a statement to the Irish Farmers Journal, gardaí confirmed that they attended an incident outside a meat processing plant in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, on Monday 2 September at approximately 1pm.

A spokesperson said a man (age unknown) was arrested in relation to breaches of the Public Order Act.

Investigations are ongoing.

Injury

A man was also injured at the protest and was taken away by ambulance to hospital.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, a protester present during the incident said: “We were having a protest and we were walking around the couple of bales that was there in the entrance and the lorries were trying to get in.

“The gardaí put extra force on us and they came over to where we were walking and they got the man beside me and they knocked him to the ground.

"They twisted his arm around his back and they walked him and I believe the man is after having his hip replaced recently.

“He was in a lot of pain. We got him sitting up and we got the ambulance for him and he’s gone to hospital.

“I was a shame to see what was happening - you wouldn’t do it to a dog.”
