I farm: “A 50-cow suckler herd on a 150ac block with the help of my mother Pat. My husband, Ronan Lynch, is a publican in Dublin and helps out with the heavy lifting.”
Sucklers: “Our cows are Hereford-Friesian crosses and all give great calves. We chose this breed cross for their docility, easiness on the land and good mothering nature. We run a 12-week spring-calving system and sell our weanlings in the autumn. We buy in bucket calves and sell them as weanlings also.”
Weather: “We were lucky to avoid the drought felt by a lot of other farmers in the country this year. Our fields border a bog so there’s always a nice amount of moisture in the ground. We took our first cut on 18 May and we are out this week getting ready for the second cut, spraying for docks.”
Sean Patrick and Charlie Lynch keep ducks and sell eggs in the local butchers.
New minister: “I’m happy to see Minister Barry Cowen’s appointment to the agriculture office. He’s a midlands man, so I’m hopeful he will do a good job.”
Next generation: “My sons Seán Patrick (10) and Charlie (eight) Lynch have a great interest in the farm. They help out with our ducks, pigs, and hens.”
Farm safety: “We put great emphasis on farm safety and try to remove any chance of an accident happening. As a rule, all machinery work is to be completed in the morning while my sons are still sleeping. This way, the two boys can come help on the farm during the day and it gives us peace of mind.”
Advice: “A tip for other farmers during these unusual times is to keep in contact with family and look out for one another. My family has a WhatsApp group. It makes asking for help and staying connected much easier.”
Progressive thinking: “My family have been farmers for generations and I’ve always loved being involved. My parents gave us a progressive attitude early on. I showed the most interest in the farm growing up and now I am in charge, despite having two brothers.”
