DEAR SIR: I am writing to you in regard to the competition advertised in the Irish Farmers Journal dated 15 July 2017.
People were asked to vote for their favourite photo, but I’m now expressing my unease at some of the pictures displayed.
Farmers are well aware of their responsibilities towards farm safety, yet three of those pictures showed scant regard for farm safety.
There is a photo of a man lying in front of a herd of cattle. All that’s needed is a dog or a bird to come and spook the cattle. Where would the farmer be then? There’s a photo of two little girls sitting up on bales, with nothing to stop them slipping down and hurting their heads.
Finally, there’s a photo of a baby, 18 months old, standing in the shed with a fork. Oh, the caption may be very clever – helping grandad etc – but if that child slipped or fell on the fork it wouldn’t be too funny.
I think those pictures are more suited for the pages of a farm safety booklet than being entered for a competition.
Whoever thought that those pictures were quaint mustn’t know much about farm safety.
