There are a large number of tillage events taking place around the country in the coming weeks.

Try to get out to some of them to hear the latest agronomy news and advice on how to manage your crops.

We've listed some of the main events below.

Kerry tillage conference

Kerry will host its inaugural tillage conference at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee, on Thursday 16 January kicking off at 2pm. There will be refreshments beforehand.

Speakers on the day include Teagasc’s Ciarán Collins on spring cereal varieties and crop margins, Scott Lovell of Goldcrop on plant protection products and John O’Loughlin and John Corbett of Grassland Agro on fertiliser and spreading.

Tony Markey of ADM will finish off the presentations with a rundown on grain markets. There will be a panel discussion with all speakers and plenty of time for questions.

Dairygold tillage conference

The Dairygold tillage conference will take place on Friday 17 January. Trade stands can be viewed from 1pm and the conference kicks off at 2pm.

This year’s theme is 'Cultivating innovation',focusing on evolving cereal crop establishment techniques.

Teagasc’s Dermot Forristal will give a presentation based on his experience with different establishment systems and Ciarán Colins will talk on the challenges of different systems and how there is not one system for all.

There will be a farmer discussion panel with Ger O’Meara, Pat Collins, Michael McCarthy and Gordon O’Sullivan.

Teagasc tillage seminars

Teagasc will host tillage seminars across the country from Tuesday 14 January to Thursday 27 February. Keep an eye out for your local event.

The events will focus on your spring crop rotation, nutrient planning and the fertiliser database, cost controls and agronomy updates on managing forward crops, grass weeds and preventing barley yellow dwarf virus.

IGGG meetings

The Irish Grain Growers Group is hosting meetings. On 14 January, members from the northeast region will meet at Donegans, Monasterboice, Co Louth, at 7.30pm.

On the night, Brian Reilly from Drummonds will talk on early-season crop management, the Irish Farmers Journal will also present on prospects for 2025.

Thomas Byrne TD will also be in attendance to talk on the Food Vision tillage report and how tillage fits into the Government’s plan.

Teagasc national tillage conference

The Teagasc national tillage conference will take place on Wednesday 29 January at the Lyrath Conference Centre in Co Kilkenny. Registration is from 9am and the conference kicks off at 9.45am.

The first half of the day will have three main sessions. The first of those sessions will focus on the future of disease, weed and pest control and what lies ahead of integrated pest management.

The second session looks at sustainable crop production and carbon, nitrogen and crop establishment elements.

The third session looks at the opportunities and challenges of legume intercropping.

After dinner, there will be four workshops and they will be repeated three times, allowing you to attend three of the workshops.

  • Workshop one: on-farm research to optimise production.
  • Workshop two: weed clinic.
  • Workshop three: environmental credentials of tillage sector and future role of AgNav.
  • Workshop four: disease control decisions for 2025 and beyond.
  • The conference will close at 4.30pm.

    AFBI arable conference

    On Thursday 6 February, the Ulster Arable Society, Ulster Farmers’ Union and the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) will host the annual agronomy and business conference for arable growers.

    This year, the conference will focus on crop production in a changing climate.

    Speakers on the day include DAERA agricultural policy director Dr Rosemary Agnew; AFBI head of plant health and integrated pest management Dr Archi K Murchie; head of the crops, environment and land use programme in Teagasc John Spink; arable farmer from Co Armagh Richard Gilpin; visionary leader and entrepreneur Tom Beach; and editor of the Irish Farmers Journal in Northern Ireland David Wright.

    The event takes place at CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus. Tickets are £35 if booked up to 30 January and £40 after 30 January. The event kicks off at 9.30am.
