Good progress has been made with spring sowing on the farm of From the Tramlines farmer Chris Bourn in Galway.
We caught up with Chris last weekend when he was sowing spring wheat in perfect conditions.
The crop was following fodder beat, the last of which was lifted in February.
Ploughed
The ground was then ploughed with a five-furrow Kevernland plough with number eight boards, ploughing 18in and disced before sowing.
Chris broadcast 370kg/ha of 10:5:25 before drilling with his 3m mounted Lemken Sapphire box drill with HE VA front-mounted press.
He generally subsoils the headlands before sowing to help minimise the effects of headland compaction.
He is now finished sowing his Quintas spring wheat, which will be whole-cropped later in the year.
The crop was sown at 200kg/ha.
He will wait for the broken weather to pass before sowing his remaining 90ac of spring barley.
