Barry Stratford from Virginia, Co Cavan, was awarded University College Cork (UCC) student of the year award at the annual agricultural science post graduation celebration and awards ceremony hosted by UCC and Teagasc.

The awards ceremony took place on Friday 6 December at the UCC campus where students, family members and faculty staff came together and celebrated the class of 2024.

As well as recognising the academic achievement of a number of individual members of the class, the individual awards reflect the breadth of opportunity within the Irish dairy industry, as well as the varied strengths and interests of students.

Over 60% of the graduating students from this cohort were awarded a first-class honours degree.

On the night, head of discipline and academic director in UCC Frank Buckley recognised the bright future that lies ahead of these recent graduates as they are future industry leaders.

Hard working

“The class of 2024 are a credit to themselves, UCC and to their families. They were hard working, dedicated and capable students across the four years of their degree course. All of the students, not just the awardees here tonight, are winners and high achievers,” he says.

With a number of students already securing important and high-performing roles across the industry, he wished the students well in their future career.

Head of animal and grassland research and innovation Prof Laurence Shalloo acknowledged the importance of the partnership of agricultural science at UCC to Teagasc.
