Why did you set up your business?
I have always enjoyed art as a hobby since I was a child and I decided to set up my own business as an artist in October 2021.
One of the few positive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic was that it helped us to focus on the important things in life and reminded us how fragile life is.
With this in mind, I resigned from my previous job and decided to pursue my dream of becoming a full-time artist.
Annie Gammell decided to set up her own business as an artist in October 2021.
Can you explain your process?
I love to take photos when I’m out walking with my dog in Muckross Gardens and I get new inspiration for my oil paintings every time I go there. I do vibrant oil paintings of my photos and my focus is on the changing seasons and the circle of life.
I use my work to transport people to special places, which connect them with the beauty of nature and the importance of enjoying precious moments. I like to name my paintings so that they portray a certain message such as Choices and Hope.
I get high-quality prints made of my paintings in various sizes and I also get greeting cards made, which can be used for all occasions. I'm also available to do commissions if somebody wants to capture a special memory or buy a unique and personal gift.
Annie Gammell's art is inspired by nature.
What is it about your business that brings you joy?
Every day I now find joy in connecting with nature and in using my art to share this joy with my customers. I have discovered the power of art in evoking emotions in people and how it can be used to help them to keep memories alive and to connect with others.
What are your hopes for your business for 2022?
My hopes for my business in 2022 are that it will continue to grow and that I will build up a personal connection with each of my customers, which makes them feel valued and inspired by the messages in my images.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to a start-up business?
I would advise anybody who is thinking of starting up their own business to do some courses with their local enterprise office and to take small steps before taking the plunge when the time is right for you.
