A couple more IFA county changes for your records.

Beef and tillage farmer Shay Gavin is the new chair of Limerick IFA after seeing off Donal O’Brien of Pallaskenry last week. Interestingly, this was the first contest for the chair of Limerick IFA in some 29 years – every other chair had been returned unopposed.

The omens are good for Gavin. The last person to win an election to become Limerick IFA chair? Only former IFA president John Dillon. Gavin replaces the affable and impressive beef farmer Aidan Gleeson.

Elsewhere, I’m told that Frank Brady is in line to replace outgoing chair Brian Treanor in Co Monaghan. Brady is a Co Galway man, farming in Co Cavan and living in Co Monaghan. He’s a well-known pig farmer.

An IFA county chair (usually) serves a single four-year term.
